Blue Heron Urban Farms

Chattahoochee Hills, GA

Date Funded: May, 2025

Blue Heron Urban Farms is a sustainable, community-centered family farm located in the Chattahoochee Hills of Georgia. Founded in 2020 on 12 acres, the farm began as a passion project to address food insecurity and preserve agricultural heritage. In 2024, with support from The Conservation Fund’s Working Farms Fund, Blue Heron expanded to 74 acres and is now working to become a vibrant hub for education, biodiversity, and collaboration in the regional foodshed.

The farm emphasizes organic, regenerative, and climate-smart practices to grow culturally significant crops, medicinal plants, edible perennials, culinary and medicinal herbs, teas, and seasonal vegetables. Designated as a wildlife sanctuary, the farm also provides protected habitat for the Great Georgia Blue Heron and a range of native species. The farm is intentional about its integration of ancestral farming methods and agroforestry, reintroducing native trees, shrubs, and flowers to support biodiversity and cultural foodways.

As an agriculture innovation and education center, Blue Heron also offers workshops on seed saving, natural building, and alternative farming practices. In partnership with Southern SARE and the University of Georgia’s Center for Urban Agriculture, the farm hosts community trainings focused on helping connect young people to green careers and equipping farmers with hands-on skills for a resilient future.

A 0% interest loan from Foodshed Capital allowed Blue Heron to purchase 100 Katahdin ewes and lambs to further diversify production and expand regenerative practices through livestock.
