Flying Plow Farm
Rising Sun, MD
Low-interest loan funded June 2025
Flying Plow Farm & CSAÂ is a 56-acre certified organic farm and regional food hub located in Cecil County, Maryland, owned and operated by partners Sarah Rider and Tom Paduano. Since its founding in 2010, the farm has grown from a shoestring CSA on rented land into a thriving year-round distribution business serving over 600 weekly CSA subscribers, attending two farmers markets, and running an on-farm retail stand. Today, Flying Plow aggregates from more than 50 regional farms, offering a diverse selection of perishable and staple foods while supporting a vibrant network of local producers.
Rooted in regenerative agriculture, Flying Plow integrates livestock and crops using rotational grazing, silvopasture systems, and cover cropping. The farm relies on a blend of draft horse and tractor power and has seen measurable improvements in soil health. Its ecological approach is matched by a deep commitment to food access equity. As a SNAP and WIC participant, the farm partners with senior centers and community organizations to deliver fresh food to underserved residents. In 2025, Flying Plow will begin accepting SNAP online, removing even more barriers to local food access.
Flying Plow’s direct-to-consumer subscription model provides a platform for customer education and regional food system advocacy. Their continued growth reflects a clear vision for long-term resilience—one built on soil health, farmer collaboration, and equitable food distribution. Recent efforts to improve staff housing and invest in marketing have positioned the farm for expansion in both production and subscription sales.
A low-interest loan from Foodshed Capital helped Flying Plow take the next step. By refinancing high-interest debt, drilling a secondary agricultural well, and supporting 2025 operating costs, the loan helped reduce financial strain, stabilize infrastructure, and fuel the farm’s continued growth. These investments will strengthen Flying Plow’s capacity to deliver healthy food, fair livelihoods, and a more resilient foodshed for years to come.
