In Richmond, VA’s Northside Community, 56% of the roughly 35,000 residents struggle with low food access. The Northside Coalition was formed to address this issue—connecting residents with fresh, healthy food, creating neighborhood autonomy and ownership, and building sustainability throughout the food value chain. In 2021 the Coalition received a grant from the Virginia Food Access Investment Fund to create a neighborhood food market, convert an exiting building into cold storage, and hire someone to run the market. The grant required up front capital, so FoodCap provided a 0% bridge loan through our Black Farmer Equity Fund to get the project started. Community Food Fellow Cheyenne Nicholas is now on board and cold storage is up and running. This loan is the second installment of their bridge loan.
