NEW ROOTS COMMUNITY FARM

NEW ROOTS COMMUNITY FARM

Founded in 2018, New Roots Community Farm (NRCF) is a nonprofit farm operating on land currently owned by the Agrarian Trust. This acreage is to be transferred to the West Virginia Agrarian Commons with NRCF to secure a 99-year lease. The land is a total of 82 acres—45 are used for hay and three are devoted to mixed vegetable production. NRCF is the only community farm in West Virginia and one of only a handful of farms growing vegetables in Fayette County. NRCF is committed to meeting the challenges of dismantling and rebuilding the food system by creating systems that are responsive to the needs of communities and to the threats posed by climate change. They use organic and regenerative practices including composting, cover cropping, reduced tillage, and amending with exclusively organic/OMRI-certified inputs. The farm collects data on the organic matter content of their soil and is working to develop automated watering systems based on measurements of soil moisture. Since its establishment in 2018, NRCF successfully worked with a diverse group of stakeholders to establish this project, and has received and managed approximately $950,000 in federal, state, and foundation grants in that time. Currently, they are awaiting revenue from high-season vegetable production as well as quarterly grant reimbursement payments, and are seeking a $50,000 loan to cashflow operations and develop internal capacity.
